Deep guide · Filtration

Filter choice, fit and airflow

A filter's efficiency rating describes capture of selected particle sizes under test conditions. It does not describe the fit of a particular cartridge in a Toronto furnace. A nominal-size filter can be slightly smaller than its printed dimensions, a rack may have gaps, and air can bypass the media. Photograph the filter slot and the clean side before changing brands.

The useful observation

Finer filtration can improve particle removal but also changes resistance. The available fan capacity, rack area, duct design and filter loading matter. EPA suggests a MERV 13 filter or the highest efficiency the system can accommodate; that last phrase is essential. Manufacturer instructions and a qualified airflow assessment take priority over a blanket upgrade.

What a good scope includes

Check the airflow arrow, exact dimensions, retaining door and filter type. A filter pushed in crooked can bow when the blower runs. A thick media cabinet may provide more area than a narrow one-inch slot, but retrofitting one is a design job. Keep the exact model and date in a record so a later service call can compare loading patterns rather than guess at an interval.

Where the boundary sits

If rooms become weak after a filter change, ask for measured airflow or static pressure and a review of return restrictions. Do not keep removing the filter to run the equipment. If dust continues to appear past the rack, investigate bypass instead of assuming every duct needs cleaning.
